Selected Project Experience
As of 2010, Biological & Environmental Consulting is the contracted firm for all District 1 Nevada Department of Transportation environmental compliance. For NDOT and a variety of other clients, B & E Consulting has worked on over 40 projects throughout the Mojave & Great Basin deserts. Representative examples are described below:
- Kyle Canyon Road, FHWA: B & E provides biological monitoring & mitigation services for a 10 mile section of desert tortoise habitat on a highway improvement project; 11 desert tortoises have been observed so far, with 3 being relocated out of harm’s way.
- Boulder City Bypass Phase 1, NDOT: B & E is currently providing biological monitoring & mitigation services for the environmental portion of Phase 1 of a new highway construction project; Duties include ensuring that desert tortoises remain out of harm’s way, consulting on Migratory Bird Treaty Act compliance, monitoring the relocation of high-voltage towers, monitoring soil testing and monitoring the installation of over 15 miles of desert tortoise-proof fencing around the project.
- Valley of Fire Water System Improvement, Nevada Division of State Parks: B & E provided pre-construction services, including presence/absence surveys and preparation of a Biological Assessment report. B & E also provided the desert tortoise monitoring services necessary to implement the B.A.
- Kyle Canyon to Indian Springs, NDOT: B & E provided desert tortoise mitigation services for a 30 mile highway improvement project in desert tortoise habitat; Over 12 desert tortoises were relocated out of harm’s way, with 31 tortoises encountered
- Toquop Energy Project Surveys, Vidler Water Company: B & E provided pre-construction over 100 miles of biological assessment surveys for proposed pipeline and well sites, as well as preparing a comprehensive Biological Assessment report.
- Clark County Desert Tortoise Occupancy Sampling, New Fields: B & E provided biologists to conduct line-distance sampling surveys for desert tortoise population monitoring.
- Muddy River Project, Harris & Associates: B & E biologists provided Migratory Bird Treaty Act compliance consultation and conducted several miles of nesting surveys. Species of concern included Southwestern Willow Flycatcher, Phainopepla, raptors and other nesting migratory birds.
